Funding Canada's universities: research thrives in a culture of excellence

Funding Canada's universities: research thrives in a culture of excellence. While student enrolment and faculty at Canada?s universities will grow by leaps and bounds over the next decade, the system is significantly underfunded to meet the challenge of nurturing a culture of excellence, particularly in university-based research, said the principal of McGill University in a major address. Governments must increase funding, larger endowments are needed, and students themselves should be included in a dialogue on financing our universities in a new century. By Heather Munroe-Blum.

Image

Cash-in or continue? An exploration of the drop out from German foreign language study between AS and A2 levels. This study is timely, set as it is against the backdrop of the government's recent strategy to discontinue the study of modern foreign languages from the compulsory curriculum in England after Key Stage 3 (at the age of fourteen) with effect from September 2005 (DfES, 2002) and the number of new initiatives and proposals which target, among others, the 14-19 age group. The main aim of this study was to explore some of the reasons behind the drop out from German foreign language study between AS and A2 levels in England using a mixture of qualitative and quantitative research methods. By Dr Catherine Watts and Dr Angela Pickering.

Earned Income Tax Credit

Earned Income Tax Credit .In recent policy discussions in the Netherlands, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has been put forward as an instrument to reduce the unemployment rate among low-skilled workers. This article discusses the economic impact of different forms of the EITC. The analysis reveals that moderately targeting the EITC to the unskilled makes the instrument more effective in reducing unemployment. "An Earned Income Tax Credit in the Netherlands: Simulations with the MIMIC model" by Floor van Oers, Ruud de Mooij, Johan Graafland and Jan Boone of the CPB - Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.
