(New York) - Amnesty International reveals the devastating toll of violence against women in Brazil's lawless "favelas," or shanty-towns, in a new report released today that highlights abuse of women both by drug gangs and by police. Growing numbers of women - due to deprivation or under duress -- are hiding guns or transporting illegal drugs as "mules" and end up in Brazil's overcrowded, unsanitary prison system, subject to beatings, torture and rape..

Advocate Change, kicks off on Friday night in Arlington, VA, and concludes Monday on Capitol Hill with a lobby day to call on Congress to increase efforts to stop violence against women globally..

Amnesty International Brings 'The Children of Darfur' Photo Tour to New Orleans, April 10-20

(New York) - Award-winning photographer Ron Haviv and Mahmoud Braima, a Darfuri displaced by the violence in his homeland, will speak at noon, Saturday, April 19 as part of an Amnesty International-sponsored photo exhibit of children from the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan. The event, co-sponsored by the organization ?Voices from Darfur? and the New Orleans' 5th Annual Human Rights Festival, will take place at the Zeitgeist Multi-disciplinary Arts Center in New Orleans, LA, and is free and open to the public. The photos will remain on display through Sunday, April 20 (details below). .
