The world in which teachers must now operate is much changed from that of the 1980s and even the 1990s. During that time, political reforms have both helped and hindered teaching. Developments in technology and media have altered the way in which information is accessed, processed and shared by young people and have changed leisure and social experiences beyond recognition. Shifts in family formation, which began before the 1980s, have continued to alter the context in which schooling takes place

Floodgates or turnstiles? Post-EU enlargement migration flows to (and from) the UK

To mark the fourth anniversary of the enlargement of the European Unionin 2004, ippr has undertaken a major study that aims to provide as definitive a picture of post-enlargement migration flows to and from the UK as possible. This report presents fresh evidence on the scale and nature of migration from the eight new Central and Eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004 and, to a lesser extent, from Romania and Bulgaria, which joined in 2007.
