The injustice of in-work poverty
The belief that work - for those who can - is the best route out of poverty has been central to Britain’s welfare state since Beveridge first set out his vision for an end to want, ignorance, disease, squalor and idleness. The Labour government has taken this to heart, basing its extensive and energetic welfare reform programme on the simple principle that work is the solution to poverty and social exclusion.
