Dirty Dining: Restaurants Need Food Safety Letter Grades, Says CSPI

In Atlanta, chicken salad stored at a balmy 50 degrees. Inadequate hand washing in Boston. Mouse droppings in a Minneapolis ice machine. A live roach scampers across a Pittsburgh cutting board. These are some of the gory details uncovered in an analysis by the Center for Science in the Public Interest of 539 restaurant inspection reports from 20 cities. Two-thirds of restaurants had these and other high-risk food safety violations.

AAAS Meetings with UK, Irish Science Leaders Yield New Ideas for Collaboration

A whirlwind trip to the United Kingdom and Ireland, led by AAAS President James J. McCarthy, reaffirmed old ties and produced new ideas for future cooperative ventures.The three-day visit, from 8-10 July, took McCarthy and AAAS Director for International Cooperation Tom Wang to Cambridge, London, and Dublin for a series of meetings with top officials in research, science education, government, and other science and engineering fields. McCarthy described the reception as gracious and the talks as wide-ranging.

Science Supervisors Say Well-Designed Curricula Drive Science Literacy

With state and local school officials placing increased emphasis on helping their students improve their performance in science, 11 top state education officials met at a AAAS Project 2061 workshop in an effort to develop new ways to promote broad scientific-literacy.During a three-day workshop at AAAS headquarters in Washington, D.C., the participants—all members of the Council of State Science Supervisors (CSSS), an organization of leaders who direct statewide efforts to improve science education—heard from colleagues about the challenges they face on the front lines.

High-quality preschool programs can boost school readiness for both poor and middle-class children, according to researchers at Georgetown University. Their study, published in the journal Science on June 27, found substantial gains in cognitive skills for four-year-olds enrolled in school-based prekindergarten programs and Head Start programs in Tulsa, Okla. .

Traditionally held the day before undergraduate commencement, tropaia exercises held by the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, Walsh School of Foreign Service, McDonough School of Business and Georgetown College recognize graduating scholars who have demonstrated academic and leadership accomplishments during their time on campus.
