As U.S. Surges in Iraq, Afghanistan Simmers

Afghan President Hamid Karzai brushed off a recent assassination attempt (al-Jazeera) by rather nonchalantly gesturing to those gathered before him to sit down so he could continue his speech, despite the nearby barrage of rockets. The incident underscored the violence, usually directed by Taliban or Taliban-connected warlords, that persists in today’s Afghanistan. The recent killing of a top-ranking Taliban leader did little to ease the bloodshed in Afghanistan’s unruly south. Still, glimmers of hope abound, like the standing-up of a decently equipped and trained national army. Police training is another story, as low salaries feeds low recruitment and rampant corruption. “Bribes are more important than bullets,” Michael Fumento writes in the Weekly Standard. But Fumento also argues that Afghanistan remains a “winnable war.”

Sarkozy Delivers the Coup de Grâce

A reputation for irascibility didn’t diminish the decisive victory (ElectionGuide.org) of Nicolas Sarkozy, who won the French presidency with 53 percent of the popular vote, just as polls had predicted. Nor, apparently, did it hurt him Sunday as Sarkozy’s party won a striking victory over its Socialist rivals (BBC) in the first round of French parliamentary elections

Trans Fat Holdouts Remain in Supermarkets, Despite Labeling

WASHINGTON—Though trans fat-labeling rules spurred many companies to remove most of the partially hydrogenated oil from most of their processed foods, hundreds of foods still contain the discredited, heart-attack-inducing ingredient, according to a limited supermarket survey conducted by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). At least 150 varieties of pot pies, microwave popcorn, frozen pizzas, pastries, cookies and convenience foods have a whole day’s worth of trans fat, according to the group, which renewed its call for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to act on a proposal to phase out partially hydrogenated oil altogether..

Greece: Bringing traffickers to justice must not be at the expense of the rights of their victims

Trafficking for forced prostitution in Greece is believed to have increased tenfold in the last 10 years. However, the government has not yet provided sufficient measures to protect and support trafficked women and girls, Amnesty International said today.
