Saving General Shinseki: on the future of wheeled armor Print E-mail

Image

Saving General Shinseki: on the future of wheeled armor by Lutz Unterseher presents the argument for and specifications of a new 'hybrid' combat vehicle featuring: considerable, versatile firepower (kinetic energy and fragmentation) without the weight penalty of a main gun system; about half the weight of an Abrams - only half the surface area; a high degree of crew protection; better strategic mobility; superior operational mobility; and acceptable tactical mobility.

Selected Major Terrorist Incidents Worldwide since the conclusion of Operation Enduring Freedom Print E-mail

Image

Selected Major Terrorist Incidents Worldwide since the conclusion of Operation Enduring Freedom. Coverage includes incidents possibly related to Al Qaeda and involving five or more fatalities -- except those occurring in Iraq, Kashmir, Israel, the West Bank, and Russia. Although the excluded areas undoubtedly involve some incidents linked to Al Qaeda, these are excluded because Al Qaeda?s overall role in these areas is probably not a major factor in the current level of activity. In total, more than 700 were killed and 2,000 were injured in these selected incidents. By Carl Conetta and Melissa Murphy.

The New Occupation: How Preventive War is Wrecking the Military Print E-mail

Image

The New Occupation: How Preventive War is Wrecking the Military . Just over a year after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Bush administration published its new National Security Strategy (NSS), giving prominent place to unilateral, preventive wars -- followed by the dismantling of the leadership and governing structures in targeted countries. What this radical new doctrine failed to acknowledge, describe or discuss was our preparation for the consequences. Left unsaid is that we would bear the heavy new burdens of protracted occupation and state building on a massive scale after these preventive wars. By Charles Knight and Marcus Corbin.

Targeting Small Arms Print E-mail

Image

Targeting Small Arms. One million people have been killed by small arms since the last UN conference on the issue in 2001. While the death toll rises, governments have failed to take concerted action to combat the problem. In pursuit of the "war on terror", some arms producers now supply arms to allies with poor human rights records. It is time states took effective control of small arms from the factory door to the arms affected community. They should back the call for the Arms Trade Treaty and fulfil their duty to protect their citizens.

European Armed Forces of Tomorrow: A New Perspective Print E-mail

Image

European Armed Forces of Tomorrow: A New Perspective. This model of European Armed Forces is intended to serve as a conceptual input toward promoting national role specialization and military integration. The annual savings to be obtained by implementing all-European Armed Forces would likely be in the ballpark of 70-80 billion Euros (2003/4 price level). By Lutz Unterseher.
