AAAS and Science Help Celebrate Euroscience Open Forum 2008
"AAAS and its journal Science are increasingly international," Alan I. Leshner, AAAS CEO and Executive Publisher of the journal Science said during a gala reception at Barcelona's famous Casa Batlló, where a packed house enjoyed the architectural flourishes of Antoni Gaudí. Leshner was in Barcelona with AAAS senior managers, Science editors and journalists, plus staff of EurekAlert!, the science-news Web site for reporters, to celebrate Euroscience Open Forum 2008. The AAAS-Science contingent contributed three sessions to the Euroscience program, staffed two exhibit booths and threw a party for AAAS members, reporters and other guests, organized by Wendy Sturley and colleagues of AAAS/Science International in Cambridge, U.K.

Researchers at AAAS Pacific Division Meeting Explore the Startling Decline of a Hawaiian Native Bird
WAIMEA, Hawaii—The Hawaii akepa is a tiny bird, about the size of a small finch, and where its scarlet cousin the I'iwi is spectacular and another cousin, the akohekohe, is an amazing blend of black, red, and orange, the akepa's beauty is more humble. While the males are brilliant orange, the females feature more muted colors that blend into mountain forests.

Medical & Science Journals Urged to Adopt Common Policy on Disclosing Financial Conflicts of Interest
The Center for Science in the Public Interest today urged editors of journals of science and medicine to adopt a common standard for disclosing financial conflicts of interest among their authors, editors, and peer reviewers. The nonprofit watchdog group, whose Integrity in Science Project monitors corporate influence on science, developed a model disclosure policy with Barnett S. Kramer, Thomas F. Babor, and Wendy Cowles Husser, respectively of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the journal Addiction, and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons; and bioethicists Arthur Caplan and Jonathan Moreno, both of University of Pennsylvania.
