Is There or Is There Not a ?Theology of Genetic Engineering?? " Genetically manipulating animals in order to increase their usefulness to us can be said to be the acme of life's instrumentalization and appropriation. It has been argued that there is a certain theology behind this which holds that all non-human nature was created to serve human needs. In this paper I attempt to show that a) this (anthropocentric) theology is more Stoic than Christian, b) that, contrary to the charge, the absence of any theology is sufficient to justify the genetic manipulation of animals, c) that, instead, some kind of theology is needed to justify the opposition to it, and finally d) that this latter (biocentric) theology has been worked out by St. Augustine.
