Education voucher scheme simpler than it's made out

Education voucher scheme simpler than it's made out . Voucher-funding does nothing to improve educational outcomes. It effectively privatises education, and results in vastly increased gaps between those who can afford to pay tens of thousands of dollars per year in top-up fees to enter former state schools ? now elite schools ? and middle-income families who live next door to those schools. Education Matters: Government, Markets and New Zealand Schools. Mark Harrison discusses the role of government and the market in education. Is education better run through political decision making or allowing parents to choose in a market setting? What is the best way to promote equity, efficiency and liberty; to protect children and consumers; to provide information, evaluate students, supply capital, train and pay teachers, determine the curriculum and provide incentives to innovate? A New Deal: Making Education Work for All New Zealanders

Image

A New Deal: Making Education Work for All New Zealanders . A New Deal provides a clear and comprehensive framework for real change. The Education Forum?s proposals include: * Giving parents greater freedom to determine what school will best suit their children and, more importantly, backing up that choice with state funding; * Trusting teachers and principals to determine the best way of organising themselves to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population in New Zealand; * Building a culture of professionalism in the teaching sector; * Providing parents, teachers, principals and the government with the information required to determine how well the education system is serving New Zealand children; and * Ensuring that students, parents and teachers have access to world class curricula and qualifications.
