Minority Science Writers Hone Journalism Skills in Summer Internship

Nearing the end of a summer’s crash course in science journalism with the award-winning news team at the journal Science, the 2008 AAAS Minority Science Writers interns have learned everything from pitching stories to podcasting, with a impressive sheaf of clips to show for their hard work. It’s a fast 10 weeks, but Fayana Richards and Andrea Lu say the experience has been invaluable.

Less is More? Teachers Get a Surprising Insight on Teaching from a Project 2061 Workshop

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Teaching more "stuff" may not be the best way to boost learning -- that's one of the key lessons a group of veteran science teachers took away from AAAS's latest Project 2061 workshop. It seems counter-intuitive. After all, the lack of science literacy among Americans of all ages has been well-documented. So shouldn't students be covering lots more material in their classrooms? But teaching fewer, more important ideas and then helping students see how the ideas relate to each other is actually much smarter teaching, said workshop participant Jim Tomlin, a biologist and a teacher-education specialist from Wright State University in Dayton. .

BEN Scholars Learn to Use Digital Libraries, Share Lessons Back at Own Institutions

Biological sciences educators are feeling a strain. As biology content rapidly changes, courses surge with diverse students, and teaching methods lean more toward inquiry-based, less lecture-style instruction, educators need more than a textbook. In an initiative coordinated by AAAS, professional societies and coalitions are providing digital libraries with peer-reviewed teaching materials and professional development activities for biological sciences professors to meet the growing need for additional biology education content and resources.

U.S. School Board Trainers to Get Ambitious New Science Resources Today

With science, mathematics and technology studies of increasing concern to U.S. school leaders, AAAS and the National School Boards Association will debut cutting-edge science-related materials and a new Web site today at a conference of school board trainers in Virginia. The materials have been developed over the past 18 months, based in large part on extensive work with elected school board members and other stakeholders in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Most state school board associations employ trainers to help prepare local board members for their work, and trainers at the three-day conference in Alexandria, Va. are expected to convey word of the new materials to boards and members in their states.
