Showdown on Trade

Showdown on Trade

(Free trade has emerged as a political football in the U.S. presidential campaign, and a proposed treaty with Colombia, recently sent to Congress by President Bush, now seems up for grabs. The deal, agreed on in 2006, aims to lift tariffs on the vast majority of goods traded between the United States and Colombia, one of the strongest U.S. allies in Latin America and a major recipient of U.S. aid. Congressional Democrats immediately moved to sideline the deal (WashPost).

Behind the Naturalization Backlog

Behind the Naturalization Backlog

By Claire Bergeron and Jeremy Banks Fact Sheet No. 21, February 2008 The processing time for naturalization applications has risen dramatically since mid-2007, to an 18-month average, as the federal government has struggled to cope with a surge in applications driven in part by a substantial fee increase. More than 460,000 people filed naturalization applications in July 2007 right before the fee hike took effect — fully one-third of the nearly 1.4 million applications that were filed during the entire fiscal year. This MPI fact sheet examines the causes, context, and concerns surrounding the backlog.

Election 2008: Outcomes and Implications presented by the Center for Politics and Governance and the Future Forum

The 2008 presidential election has already proven to be one of the most interesting and unpredictable in U.S. history. On the Republican side, frontrunners have faded to near extinction only to roar back and take the national lead. Still other candidates soared to a sizable national lead early only to flame out spectacularly and exit the race over the span of a few weeks.
