Innovative Tools—And Long-Term Funding—Needed to Transform Undergraduate Science Education

Nathan Klingbeil and his colleagues at Wright State University have found a way to double the graduation rate of engineering students. The key element is modifying how and when calculus is taught, so that it is not a barrier to learning but is in sync with how budding engineers solve problems. .

Long-term care – who will pay the bill? debt

Long-term care – who will pay the bill? debt

As Canada's population ages, a growing number of frail seniors will require long-term care. Currently, the financing of long-term care is a patchwork. Access to long-term care and its cost to individuals vary depending on the region where they live and whether they are still at home or in a residential facility. How will governments address the anticipated increase in long-term care needs in the next two decades and beyond? Because there is little information about the level of public funding currently available, let alone future funding, Canadians are not in a position to make informed decisions on how to plan for their care needs in the future.

Northern Skills for National Prosperity debt

With the North disproportionately hit by the recession, and high unemployment among younger and older people, there is an urgent need to exceed current employment projections. In its 10-year strategy, the Northern Economic Futures Commission also says it will be essential to create half a million good-quality private sector jobs. This presents a challenge to employers and policymakers – they must create the conditions for businesses to flourish. And for that to happen, the North needs a strong focus on productivity and skills.

Former Peanut Corporation of America Officials Indicted

Former Peanut Corporation of America Officials Indicted

Corporate disregard for food safety is a serious crime, especially when it leads to deaths. The behavior of the Peanut Corporation of America in 2009 clearly warranted criminal prosecution. At least nine people died and hundreds were sickened by Salmonella-contaminated products coming out of this filthy Georgia plant. We are pleased that the Department of Justice has indicted this company’s former owner and other former PCA officials. Today's indictment should send a powerful signal to food industry officials that they and their companies could suffer severe consequences if they recklessly put consumers at risk of a foodborne illness.
