Autism and 'Rain Man'

Autism and 'Rain Man'

Researcher examines the representation of autism in the classic film. Egenis researcher Dr Ginny Russell took part in the ‘Sickness on the Screen’ series of Screen Talks at the Exeter Picturehouse last Monday (22 April). Dr Russell introduced Barry Levinson's Rain Man (1988), a film that both raised awareness of autism and yet attracted criticism from the autism community for leading to a common stereotype that all people with autism have savant skills. An informal discussion in the bar after the screening touched on these issues, as well as discussing the film and its portrayal of the ‘autistic hero’ (played by Dustin Hoffman). .

One step forward, two steps back: Evaluating the institutions of British immigration policymaking debt

This paper explores four key issues affecting the ability of British immigration policy and administration bodies to do – and to be seen to do – a good job. Naturally, it focuses on the Home Office and the UK Border Agency, raising a number of questions that are still to be answered following the announced abolition of UKBA in March. The key issues addressed are: • The Home Office's monopoly on immigration policymaking, even though it is a cross-cutting issue with impacts and implications for almost every department in Whitehall • The 'culture of caution' that threatens to suffocate the Home Office • The confused structure and poor communication that led the Home Office and UKBA to operate as almost completely separate organisations, widening the gap between policy and implementation • The tension between evidence-based policymaking and political demands, which undermines the ability of researchers and policymakers to make effective use of evidence to inform and support their decisions. The author, doctoral researcher Erica Consterdine, conducted 51 interviews with current and former MPs and ministers, employers and employer associations, trade unions, NGOs, thinktanks and experts in the field, and civil servants, which informed and illustrate this paper.

Chicken, Ground Beef Top List of Riskiest Meats

Ground beef and chicken are by far the riskiest meat and poultry products in the American food supply and pose the greatest likelihood of hospitalization, according to a new report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Furthermore, according to the nonprofit group's analysis of more than 33,000 cases of foodborne illness connected to products regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, chicken nuggets, ham, and sausage pose the lowest risk of foodborne illness.
