Columbia and Regional Security

Image

Columbia and Regional Security. Newly elected Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has declared a state of emergency, keeping an election pledge to beef up Colombia's war effort. Angel Rabasa and Peter Chalk argue that the threat of political and military deterioration in Colombia could soon confront the U.S. with a serious security crisis. "Colombian Labyrinth: The Synergy of Drugs and Insurgency and Its Implications for Regional Stability" explores whether the Columbian crisis could spill over into Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil..

Homeland Security

Homeland Security. The Brookings Institution favor retaining a strong Office of Homeland Security within the White House responsible for coordinating and leading the homeland security effort. The OHS director needs the necessary authority, however, to develop both a national homeland security strategy and an integrated, government-wide homeland security budget for presentation to and defense on Capitol Hill. James Steinberg, Ivo Daalder, James Lindsay, Michael O'Hanlon, I.M. Destler and Paul Light therefore believe that the homeland security council, office, and director should be given statutory authority. "Assessing the Department of Homeland Security".

Securing Nuclear Materials

Image

Securing Nuclear Materials. It is most likely that a terrorist seeking to manufacture a nuclear weapon would attempt to do do using high-enriched uranium (HEU) as its fissile material. At the same time, the economic and political collapse of the Soviet Union has made the supply of HEU in that region particularly vulnerable to theft or diversion. Robert Civiak of the Federation of American Scientists proposes three ways in which these stockpiles of HEU can be reduced, facilitating efforts to prevent the diversion of HEU to terrorist organizations.

Casus Belli? UNSCOM Report on Iraq

Casus Belli? UNSCOM Report on Iraq. Much of the Bush administration's case for extending the war on terror to Iraq rests upon the evidence of the UN weapons inspectors. Here you can read UNSCOM's final report on their efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's stock of weapons of mass destruction - and to hinder Iraq's capability to build new weapons. The "Report on status of disarmament and monitoring" was written by UNSCOM.
