| Choice in Social Housing. Traditionally local authority housing is allocated according to need, connections to a local area and your place on the waiting list. "Squeezed Out: Choice and Affordability in Housing" explores the choices individuals make and what the public policy response might be if we are to lift some of the current restrictions on choice. Affordability reveals itself as a central constraint. | By Institute for Public Policy Research, UK. | Housing Policy Resource. |

| Housing Demand. This paper addresses the problem of those areas to which many people have moved, where the economy is strongest and where, consequently, housing demand is greatest. The paper examines: the pressures for more homes, how many new homes are needed, the impact of geography, housing conditions, the shortfall of new homes and the causes of housing shortages, increasing supply and affordability. It concludes that housing shortage may become one of the most significant social issues facing the UK over the next twenty years. | Home Zones. A home zone is a residential street where people come before vehicles. Home zones can promote road safety, provide safe routes for children to walk to school, and create children's play areas and public spaces where people can meet. They roughly cost £1,000 per metre of road (equivalent to Euro 1,640 or US $1,400). | Low Cost Home Ownership. A Task Force set up by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation examined the future for publicly subsidised low-cost home-ownership projects. They found that Strategic use of low-cost home-ownership initiatives can achieve wider benefits, in addition to increasing housing supply: they can help achieve more inclusive, mixed-income communities, contributing to economic and social stability in both high and low value areas. Current low-cost home-ownership arrangements could be improved by more creative use of the 'Homebuy' model (using equity loans) and a standard lease for shared ownership.
