Reinventing the Police Station Print E-mail

Image

Reinventing the Police Station. With the police estate undergoing dramatic change, this report examines the ways police buildings shape people?s confidence in the police, their fear of crime and sense of security, and identifies means of raising standards in the design and management of the police estate. The police have a proud design history, but they have failed, recently, to build on it. All too often police facilities send off the wrong messages about the attitudes and working of the police. Reinventing the Police Station argues that there needs to be something close to a revolution in the way the police and the Home Office approach police buildings ? that they have to become much more sensitive to the contribution the estate can make to strengthening relations between the police and citizens, and reassuring the public. Tough Love A Critique of the Domestic Violence, Crime, & Victims Bill 2003 Print E-mail

Image

Tough Love A Critique of the Domestic Violence, Crime, & Victims Bill 2003. This pamphlet will examine the magnitude of domestic violence problems and what risks and benefits the proposed legal measures will present. Significant issues are raised, not just for the victims of domestic violence, but also for the entire criminal justice system. Will the new bill pose a serious threat to civil liberties? Will the intended measures to support victims be truly effective or are they mere window dressing? The author considers the dangers of introducing a rigid system to deal with the wide range of domestic violence offences, and suggests an alternative, more flexible approach. Asylum seekers: the facts Print E-mail

Asylum seekers: the facts. This fact file aims to debunk myths about where people seeking asylum come from, why they leave their countries of origin, why they come to the UK and whether the UK receives more than its ?fair share? of people seeking protection. It also pulls together existing statistical information about the numbers of asylum seekers in the UK and Europe, the effectiveness of the procedures for determining claims and the cost of the asylum system. Immigration: Asylum Seekers Print E-mail

Image

Immigration: Asylum Seekers. Rising numbers of asylum seekers in Europe have generated concerns within states about imbalances in the costs borne by different regions. Germany and the UK have responded by introducing systems of dispersal of asylum seekers between Länder or regions to help redistribute the costs of reception, reduce social tensions and deter potential applicants. The report analyses German and British policies and suggests that dispersal has had mixed success in realising these goals. "Spreading the costs of asylum seekers" by Christina Boswell is published by the Anglo-German Foundation.

Police Performance Print E-mail

Image

Police Performance. "How Is Your Police Force Performing?", contains the first ever comprehensive performance league tables for police forces in England and Wales. The research suggests that: quick hit initiatives like the UK Government?s Safer Streets drive may distort police performance; the best forces in the country are the smallest so local focus is key; many large urban forces are failing their communities and may need more funding.

Risk Factors Among Young People Print E-mail

Image

Risk Factors Among Young People. Research has identified factors in children's and young people's lives associated with an increased risk of problems at school, drug and alcohol misuse and criminal behaviour. Other factors protect them from difficulties, even when heavily exposed to risk. This evidence has established the potential for strategies to promote children's positive development, based on the risk and protection profile of the neighbourhoods where they live. "Youth at risk? A national survey of risk factors, protective factors and problem behaviour among young people in England, Scotland and Wales" by Sarah Beinart, Barry Anderson, Stephanie Lee and David Utting is published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
