Science: New Anti-Malarial Drug Candidate Shows Promise

By returning to traditional screening methods, researchers have identified an effective anti-malarial drug candidate, known as NITD609, which seems to kill the blood stages of the two major malaria parasites when administered orally, just once a day. This discovery is especially timely since researchers in Asia have begun to report a building resistance to artemisinin, the main ingredient in current malaria treatments for about 100 million patients each year.

Science Report Describes Deepwater Horizon Oil Plume as of June

A peer-reviewed study, appearing today on the Science Express Web site, suggests that the blowout of BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig resulted in an oil plume that was still massive in June, two months after the explosion. According to Richard Camilli of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the research also shows that levels of dissolved oxygen within the plume had not dropped enough by mid-June to suggest bacteria were breaking down the oil.
