Scholarship Program Helps STEM Students and Professionals Become K-12 Teachers

The new presidential administration has identified improved teacher quality in science and mathematics as critical for education, and educators are responding to that challenge. A workshop organized and hosted by AAAS and run by National Science Foundation (NSF) program directors instructed nearly 50 participants on how to tap funds in a federal scholarship program intended to encourage undergraduates studying science and math to consider careers in teaching in grade schools.

Fordham Law has received a $1 million gift from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. The gift will fund the Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP Classroom in the new law school building. The building is a centerpiece of Fordham Law's $100 million fund-raising campaign. Fordham Law, which announced the ambitious campaign in November, has already raised $77.5 million. In addition to the new law school building, the campaign will support scholarships, faculty chairs, law school centers, and student services

Satellite images captured before and after the 7-8 August clash between Georgia, South Ossetian separatists, and Russia reveal that 424 civilian structures near Tskhinvali were damaged by 19 August, although they appeared intact in images taken on 10 August and earlier, according to a new AAAS report.

KAPOW! How Comic Books and Faculty Innovators Are Transforming Science Education

Reading comic books in science class used to mean that students weren’t paying attention. But at a conference co-sponsored by AAAS and the National Science Foundation (NSF), Jay Hosler, an assistant professor of biology at Juniata College in Huntington, Penn., showed how he transformed a medium once used only to tell the stories of superheroes and goofy teenagers into a resource engaging students with science.
