Initiated by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a high level delegation from the Central African Republic (CAR) was hosted in Rwanda by the Aegis Trust and the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission from 11-17 January 2016 to learn from peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts after the Genocide against the Tutsi. The 21-person delegation was led by Dr Clement Anicet Guiyama-Massogo, Minister in the Office of the President and Spokesperson of the CAR Government. The group included cabinet ministers, religious leaders and prominent members of civil society.

Burundi crisis: time to support AU’s welcome leadership .

Following the 13 November statement by Aegis Trust regarding the responsibility to protect civilians in Burundi, we agree with the United Nations human rights chief Zeid Raad al-Hussein that, in regard to the threat of mass atrocities to civilians there, “the time for piecemeal responses and fiddling around the edges is over”.

Aegis Students campaign for UN veto restraint on response to mass atrocities

Aegis Students campaign for UN veto restraint on response to mass atrocities .

On December 13, the Aegis’ UK Youth Department hosted this year’s National Campaign Conference. Dozens of participants from seven different universities met to share ideas, coordinate activities and develop a final strategy for the campaign on UN veto restraint. The campaign will call for the permanent five members of the UN Security Council (P5) to restrain their veto in mass atrocity situations. Despite their responsibility to maintain international peace and security, the P5 have repeatedly used their veto to strike down resolutions that respond to mass atrocities, immobilising the Security Council and undermining its purpose. Yet, despite its international significance the issue is rarely discussed by policy makers or in the public forum.
