Pakistan: Authorities must protect and respect human rights in bringing an end to violent confrontation

Amnesty International is deeply concerned at risk to life caused by the escalating violence between Pakistani security forces and seminary (madrassa) students affiliated to the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) in Islamabad which has so far claimed the lives of at least 19 people, including a photojournalist, a paramilitary ranger, four students and several by-standers. More than 150 people have reportedly been injured, some critically with multiple bullet wounds.

Kosovo (Serbia): Romanian police and UNMIK must be brought to account for the deaths of demonstrators in Kosovo.

Amnesty International calls on the international community to ensure that justice is done in relation to the killing of two Kosovo Albanians and the wounding of scores of others during a demonstration in February 2007 in the capital Pristina. The organization makes the call in the wake of the publication of a second report by a task force established by the United Nations Interim Administration in Kosovo (UNMIK) to establish criminal liability for the shootings, and address operational failures within the UNMIK police.

Iran: Amnesty International outraged at reported stoning to death and fears for victim's co-accused

Amnesty International today expressed outrage at the reported execution by stoning of Ja'far Kiani on 5 July 2007 in the village of Aghche-kand, near Takestan in Iran's Qazvin province. The organization urged the Head of the Judiciary, Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi, to immediately intervene to prevent the execution by stoning of Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, a woman convicted in the same case.
