Unlocking Value: How we all benefit from investing in alternatives to prison for women offenders

This report argues that an excellence institute for the criminal justice system could cut crime and save millions of pounds every year by making sentencing more effective. It highlights how a criminal justice system focused on short-term cost control and narrow re-offending targets is actually costing us more in the long-term. The authors argue that a better understanding of the effectiveness and costs to society of prison and its alternatives, such as community sentences, would allow resources to be targeted on the most effective sentences, in order to cut crime and provide better value for money.
