STATEMENT Iran: Re-elected administration must make rhetoric reality for free expression online

After the results, there were nation-wide eruptions of joy and hope, as Iranians celebrated the election as a recognition of their desire for reform and moderation of the country’s isolating and repressive tendencies. Rouhani’s contender, the hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, had amongst his policies further curbs to freedom of expression and rights online. While the election of Rouhani is not a guarantee of fundamental freedoms, it is an administration that is more inclined towards the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ Article 19, and the election clearly shows the desire among Iranian voters for a new approach to guarantee these fundamental rights.

Trump Administration Expands Global Gag Rule

On Monday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson approved a plan called “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance,” which expands the Global Gag Rule restrictions to virtually all global health assistance provided by the federal government, including from the Department of State, USAID, and the Department of Defense—restricting $8.8 billion dollars in financial support for global health programs. The expanded Trump Global Gag Rule affects a pool of funding nearly 15 times as large as the George W. Bush-era Global Gag Rule.

The Center for Reproductive Rights yesterday filed a request for more than $4.7 million in legal fees accrued during its court battle with the state of Louisiana over its clinic shutdown law—a measure that was recently permanently blocked by a federal district court judge. Remarkably, Louisiana continues to defend its unconstitutional clinic shutdown law despite last summer’s landmark Supreme Court ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v Hellerstedt which struck an identical Texas measure as unconstitutional..
