Honduras: Another Two Journalists Killed as Crackdown on Free Expression Intensifies

ARTICLE 19 expresses its deep concern at the recent killings of two more journalists – José Bayardo Mairena Ramírez and Manuel Juárez – on 27 March in the northern territory of Honduras. This brings the total number of journalists killed in similar circumstances in Honduras to five.

ARTICLE 19 welcomes the United Nations Human Rights Committee’s fifth periodic report and its reflection of ARTICLE 19’s concerns regarding the deterioration of freedom of expression in Mexico. The Committee issued several recommendations to the Government of Mexico pertaining to its general human rights record, during its 98th session held from 8-26 March. With specific regard to the right to freedom of expression, the Committee recommends that Mexico:

Bangladeshi journalist and ARTICLE 19 fellow Rafiqul Islam Montu has received the Canadian Award for Excellence in Journalism for his investigative article on coastal areas affected by climate change. The story was researched and produced as part of ARTICLE 19's Fellowship Programme for Bangladeshi journalists, implemented in partnership with Mass Line Media Centre. .

USA: Obama Meets Human Rights Defenders, including ARTICLE 19, in Human Rights Discussion

On 18 February, I was amongst a handful of human rights activists who met with US President Barak Obama and senior members of his administration to discuss the role of the US in countering the global deterioration of human rights. I was taking part in the 2010 Human Rights Summit in Washington DC organised by Freedom House and Human Rights First where a group of some 20 activists were selected to meet the president. .
