The government's latest welfare reform green paper, published last week, was designed to give welfare-to-work a much needed jolt. Research involving over 250 homeless people in Newcastle, Birmingham and London, exploring the extent to which homeless people are involved in learning and skills activities, and their experiences of these. Key findings outline the levels of skills and qualifications amongst homeless people, the benefits of participation, many of the difficulties and barriers that they face, and ways in which learning and skills can contribute to their attempts to move towards more independent living.

Dads need twice as much paid paternity leave and a culture shift towards father-friendly work, says Children’s Minister

08 June 2007. Paid paternity leave should be doubled so that fathers can spend at least a month with their new born children, according to Children’s Minister Beverley Hughes. The proposal comes from a collection of essays, Politics for a New Generation, published by the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr) and Palgrave Macmillan, which sets out a progressive agenda for Britain as a new Prime Minister takes office.
